Understanding Design Can Help Your Remodel
If you have a great team of designers, like our team at Avocet, you don’t have to worry about this as much… but having an idea of the principles of design will help you greatly in the process of remodeling your home. Not only on having a solid idea of what you want, but seeing where your project is going to lead, and how it will all eventually look.
Balance - This seems simple, as you want your home to look balanced, but in practice, it can be a little more complicated. There are few schools of thought on this, but most importantly, you want every single room to balance out with one another, as well as the whole house to come together. Some people opt for an asymmetrical design, but this takes a good eye because if something is a little too off, it will not look right.
Rhythm - Rhythm is a big focus for us personally because if your home does not flow with itself, you and others will notice. This is a little more of an abstract concept, but just think of homes that you felt comfortable in, this is generally because of the rhythm of the home. This can be done through things like adding a theme throughout the house, a certain finish on all appliances, etc…
Unity - This ties into rhythm but is more about the idea of tying your entire house together. While each room of your house can have its own identity, the overall theme has to work. Think of the southwestern style, while there are differences, you know the style. So, whatever style you pick, make it throughout the whole house.
Contrast - Yes, we just talked a lot about making your home work together, but, you do need some contrast, or your home will look too uniform. This could be anything from an accent wall with wood, to a wall color accenting the rest of the room. Just remember, too much of a good thing will turn sour. The same goes for design. If you only go with one look, it will get boring.
Details - Lastly, there are small details. This will really make or break a home. Let’s say you have everything perfect, but only the base layer, it just won’t feel finished. So, when it comes to the details, this is where you can go a little crazy and really let your personality shine. Want a very specific trim or backsplash? This is the time to really hammer home the overall feel you want for your home. Whatever you do, don’t skimp on the details as they are what makes a home special and yours.
